Hyderabad, June 12, 2026. Telugu superstar Ram Charan's much-awaited sports drama 'Peddi' has delivered exactly the kind of box-office storm his fans had been waiting for. Released in theatres on June 4, 2026, the film has earned Rs 366 crore worldwide in just nine days, claiming the title of the highest-grossing South Indian film of 2026 so far. With preview shows held on June 3, 'Peddi' got off to a thunderous start and has shown no signs of slowing down since, with houseful boards going up at single screens and multiplexes alike across the country.

A Record-Breaking Start

According to trade analysts, 'Peddi' had collected more than Rs 315 crore gross worldwide within the first five days of its release. By the seventh day, the figure had crossed Rs 340 crore, making it one of the fastest films in recent years to reach that milestone. The frenzy around the film in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana shattered several advance-booking records, with morning-show tickets in many cities selling out a full day before release. Single-screen and multiplex shows ran packed across the region for the entire opening week.

Roaring Overseas Numbers

The success of 'Peddi' was not confined to India. In the North American market, the film touched the USD 3 million mark within just six days of release, making it Ram Charan's third film to enter the '3 million dollar club'. The film drew an enormous response in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Gulf countries, where large numbers of Indian diaspora audiences flocked to cinemas. In many places, the opening weekend turned into a community celebration, with fans arriving in traditional attire and cheering their favourite star on the big screen.

The Story and the Cast

Set in 1980s rural Andhra Pradesh, 'Peddi' tells the story of a spirited villager who plays cricket for hire, turning out for whichever team is willing to pay him. Over the course of the film, he gradually unites his community through sport to defend their pride against a powerful rival. Alongside Ram Charan, the film features Shiva Rajkumar, Janhvi Kapoor, Jagapathi Babu, Divyenndu and Boman Irani in key roles, giving the narrative both emotional weight and considerable star power.

The Buchi Babu and Rahman Magic

The film is directed by Buchi Babu Sana, who won the National Film Award for Best Telugu Film for his debut feature 'Uppena' (2021). 'Peddi' is only his second film, and with it he has proved that his first success was no fluke. The music has been composed by Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman, whose melodies have deepened the film's emotional beats. The songs dominated the music charts even before release, building anticipation for the film. Critics have hailed Ram Charan's performance as the finest of his career, describing it as a career-defining turn.

Why Ram Charan's Return Matters

After the global success of 'RRR', there was an enormous weight of expectation on Ram Charan. 'Peddi' was his next big solo film, and it carried the responsibility of proving that he could carry a film of this scale on his own shoulders. The film's record-breaking earnings have answered that question. For the role of a cricketer, Ram Charan trained hard for months, transformed his physique and learned the finer points of the game. That dedication is clearly visible on screen, which is why both audiences and critics are praising his performance so warmly.

Relief for the Industry

At a time when Hindi cinema's box-office performance has been mixed, the triumph of 'Peddi' is being seen as a major relief for the wider Indian film industry. The film is proof that, with a strong story, big stars and the right promotional strategy, big-screen films can still pull audiences into cinemas. Over the past few years, films such as 'RRR', 'Baahubali' and 'Pushpa' have shown that the cinema of the South is no longer merely regional but offers entertainment on a pan-Indian and global scale.

The Rise of the Pan-India Film

'Peddi' is also part of a larger shift in Indian cinema, where films made in one language now routinely cross regional boundaries and play to audiences nationwide in dubbed versions. The trend, accelerated by 'Baahubali' and 'RRR', has blurred the old lines between Bollywood and the South. Distributors note that a strong Telugu or Tamil film today can out-earn many Hindi releases even in the Hindi belt, a reality that 'Peddi' has reinforced. For Ram Charan, the timing could not be better, as it cements his standing as a genuine pan-Indian star rather than a regional draw.

What's Next

Following its success, all eyes are now on how quickly 'Peddi' will cross the Rs 400 crore mark. The film has maintained a strong hold even into its second weekend. Trade pundits believe that if the current momentum continues, it could turn out to be the biggest hit of Ram Charan's career. In the coming weeks, attention will also turn to the film's OTT and satellite deals, which are usually struck at record prices for blockbusters of this size. For now, 'Peddi' has become an example of how Indian audiences still head to theatres for a good story told on a grand scale.
