Évian-les-Bains, June 12. The annual summit of the Group of Seven—the world's largest industrial economies—is being hosted this year by France. The summit will be held from June 15 to 17, 2026 in the picturesque town of Évian-les-Bains, near the border with Switzerland. This is the second time Évian is hosting this prestigious summit; it previously held the 29th G8 summit in 2003. This year's summit will discuss pressing issues such as international peace and security, multilateralism and the global economic outlook.
Who Is Taking Part
The leaders of the core G7 member states are attending the summit—Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, France's President Emmanuel Macron, Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the United States President Donald Trump. The European Union is being represented by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
A Special Invitation for India
This year France has invited several important countries as special guests, prominent among them India. India's participation, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is testament to the country's rising diplomatic standing on the world stage. Besides India, Brazil (President Lula da Silva), Kenya (President William Ruto), South Korea (President Lee Jae Myung) and Syria (President Ahmed al-Sharaa) have also been invited. This reflects an effort to include the voice of emerging economies and the Global South at the forum.
Pressing Issues on the Agenda
This year's summit agenda is packed with serious global challenges. International peace and security is a key theme, as conflicts and tensions persist in many parts of the world. In addition, there will be in-depth deliberations on strengthening multilateralism and maintaining global economic stability. Issues such as trade, energy security, climate change and artificial intelligence (AI) are also expected to be at the centre of discussions. Important conversations may take place among the leaders over the Trump administration's trade policies and tariffs.
Significance for India
India's participation in the G7 summit is significant in several respects. It gives India an opportunity for direct dialogue with the world's most developed economies. Prime Minister Modi can use the forum to advance India's interests in areas such as trade, investment, climate and technological cooperation. As a leading representative of the Global South, India can also raise the concerns of developing countries at the forum. The summit also offers an important opportunity for bilateral meetings.
