Bengaluru, June. Preparations for India's ambitious human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, are reaching a decisive phase, with ISRO steadily completing key tests.

Thousands of tests done

By early 2026, ISRO had completed over 8,000 ground tests and all structural qualification, engineering, and propulsion tests. Flight-software simulations and environmental tests are in progress.

Strength from Shukla's experience

The experience of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's Axiom-4 mission has bolstered the Gaganyaan programme. Shukla became the first Indian in space in 41 years and conducted scientific experiments aboard the International Space Station.

The road ahead

The programme plans crewed missions after uncrewed test flights, along with the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) module and several technology-demonstration missions by 2028. These steps lay the foundation for India's long-duration space capability.
